University of the Third Age – U3A Whitworth and district is part of the University of the Third Age (U3A) movement which is a unique and exciting organisation which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery! There are over 1,000 branches across the UK and international branches

U3A Whitworth & Districtwant to serve the needs of retired and semi retired people throughout the Rossendale Valley, by offering opportunity to all to become a part of the U3A community, by joining us at the monthly meeting or at the special interest groups currently on offer. There are opportunities for learning new skills, making new friends and having fun in the process, with trips to the theatre, gardens, historical buildings and art galleries an additional extra. To find out more come to one of our meetings, (with no obligation to join).

Meetings are monthly, first Wednesday of the month and held at Sunnybank day centre, Whitworth at 1pm. We also have a Facebook page and our website is due to be launched in the autumn. Members are also sent quarterly news letters to help keep up to date on planning. Membership is £15 pa, thereafter groups are free and offer a range of subjects from art, play reading to walking and garden inspiration. We also offer creative writing, history, family history, flower arranging and wellness. We anticipate that subjects on offer will increase as our membership grows.

Whitworth currently has a range of interest groups which are led by U3A members. Each group is self-supporting, members share their knowledge, experience and skills with each other and share responsibility for making the group work. To join an interest group you will need to become a member of Whitworth U3A. You can join as many of the interest groups as you like, however, this will depend on availability within individual groups.
