Stepping Stones Developmental Therapy Unit provides specialist assessments, diagnosis (if appropriate), advice and on-going intervention for pre-school children with complex neurodevelopmental problems. We run specialist nursery groups for the children and provide support for their families in a friendly and nurturing environment. Therapy services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, are integrated into the specialist nursery groups where the needs of the child can be met through a play orientated, integrated approach.
Referrals to the service are organised via the child’s GP, Health Visitor, School Nurse, Paediatric or Neonatology Consultants or Clinical Psychologist, to the Lead Community Paediatrician for Stepping Stones (Dr Malakar c/o secretary @ ELCAS administration offices Area 3 Level 3 Burnley General Hospital)
We provide an outreach service for therapy and play, if indicated, into the family homes and nurseries working alongside and providing information to families and other agencies to ensure that every aspect of the child’s development needs are being met consistently by all involved.
The unit itself includes a soft play area, a garden area for outside therapy and play and a sensory room. The nursery rooms are bright and colourful and provide a nurturing environment. We also run specialist courses for parents including Cygnet (for parents of children with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder).
